Equine Intensive Care Unit internship (6 months)
The Scone Equine Hospital Intensive Care Unit employs three medicine clinicians, two with specialist qualifications. The medical caseload consists of approximately 1000 cases per annum, including 280 neonatal medical, 160 adult medical and 560 post-surgical cases.
The Intensive Care intern will be working under the supervision and guidance of three senior in-house veterinarians. The internship will commence at the beginning of August and finish at the end of January. During this period the intern will gain skills in the clinical assessment, diagnostic techniques and management of the intensive care patient, in particular the equine neonate. The intern will not have primary case responsibility however will be expected to be intimately involved in the initial evaluation of the cases and their continued management. The intern will not have primary call duty however will be expected to assist the duty veterinarian on a one in two on-call roster.
Equine Surgical Internship (18 months)
The surgical facility of the Scone Equine Hospital employs four equine surgeons, two with specialist qualifications. The surgical case load consists of approximately 1000 cases per annum, including 250 arthroscopic procedures, 150 celiotomy procedures and 25 laparoscopic procedures.
The surgical intern will be working under the supervision and guidance of four senior in-house surgeons. The internship will begin in July. During the initial six months, the intern will rotate alternately between anaesthesia and surgery. For the latter part of the year the intern’s time will be divided between surgery, anaesthesia and radiology. During the rotation in anaesthesia, the intern will receive training from the senior anaesthetist and perform anaesthesia under their guidance. The surgical rotation will involve caring for the post-surgical patients in hospital and assisting the on-call surgeon with the work-up and treatment of patients admitted to the surgical facility. After hours duty will be a one in two roster.
